I had the opportunity yesterday Jan 25, 2011 of teaching a  course on current technology and what a business looks for to a group of students at Branford Hall Career Institute located in South Windsor CT. Branford Hall residents in Connecticut can find the career training they are looking for at Branford Hall’s Windsor location. With career training programs in paralegal, professional fitness training and computer networking management as well as programs in massage therapy, medical assisting, and health claims.

DTG president Mark Ambrose was invited down to the school by Nancy Davis, Director of Career Services to talk to the students on not just technology but what a business is looking for into’s market.  A course outline of the talk is listed below.  DTG has been working with Branford Hall and its interns for the past 3 years. Students come to work with DTG and learn what is really like to work in the business world. They go out on service calls with qualified technicians and learn first hand how to fix problems and deal with customers.

Mark Ambrose’s talk to Branford Hall Career Institute students:

Today’s business is looking for doers (people that can do a job and self motivators otherwise know as entrepreneurs. The last being a very small percentile of the work force.
I started as a doer and eventually went into business myself. I was tired of working for someone else.
My philosophy at one point in time was “the worst that could happened to me was to work for someone else.” This never happened and I don’t expect it to.
Being in business yourself brings highs and lows.
Nobody feeds you work. You find it yourself.
If it breaks you fix it, no matter the day or time.
Depend on no one but your self.
You should know what is coming down the road and how to adjust for it.
You have to be a bit of a sales person
You have to have not only technical knowledge but a sense of business knowledge for tax purposes
When its good its good and when its bad its bad
Lot of hard work and sometimes sleepless nights.
You never know what the next day will bring
You get what you put in to the business

Working for a company and what the company looks for.
Skill Level – Come prepared to work and use the resources that are available for you ex. Internet (drives, manuals)
Punctuality – Are you at work on time or late or arrive on the dot – arrive at least 10 min
Appearance – Clothing attire not necessary suit and tie Learn the dress code of the company you work for. If you hang wires wear jeans. If your going to a meeting, dress up. Plan to get dirty. Know your assignment.
Security and trust – Confidential info such hosp also data on the computer screen – not to talk about to friends
Reliability – Show up when you are suppose to and do what you said you are going to do the first time. If you sick call it in asap. If you will late or not show up for any reason have the courtesy to contact your supervisor BEFORE not after the time you were suppose to show up.
Professionalism – Come in to work not browse the internet
Eager attitude and willing to learn – but able to work Independently – nobody like to babysit – use the internet as a resource
